The county seat, and how far it spreads
Olathe is the Johnson County seat. The older streets are around downtown. From there the city has grown a long way out, west toward K-7 and south toward West 183rd Street, and much of that growth is newer subdivisions. Out on West 183rd Street, around Ensor Park & Museum, the land opens up and it feels more like the country.
I-35 through the middle, K-7 and K-10 at the edges
I-35 cuts through Olathe on its way between Kansas City and Gardner, and it carries a lot of trucks. K-10 runs along the north side, where Olathe meets Lenexa, and K-7 runs north and south through the west side. A commute from Olathe can be a long one, up I-35 toward downtown Kansas City or across on K-10.
Long highway drives in a Kansas City summer bake everything under the hood. The alternator works hard with the air on high, and the serpentine belt that turns it takes the heat too. Then winter comes, and a cold engine is harder for the starter to turn over. That is why so many no starts show up on the first hard freeze.
When it won't start in the driveway
A morning no start is usually one of three things, and they can look alike from the driver's seat. Josh checks the charging system and the starter before he replaces anything, so you aren't paying for a starter when the alternator is the problem. If it turns out to be only the battery, he will tell you that so you can sort it out. Here is how the three usually show up.
- Clicking, or a slow and tired crank: often the battery, or corroded battery terminals
- One loud click and nothing, with the dash lights still bright: often the starter
- Starts on a jump, then dies or shows a battery light while you drive: often the alternator

Newer subdivisions and HOA rules
A lot of Olathe homes sit in newer subdivisions with a homeowners association. Some HOAs have rules about car repairs in the driveway, or about how long a car can sit there. Read yours before you book, and ask Josh how the job will go so you can plan around it.
A garage works too, as long as there is room to walk around the car and get the hood up.

Questions people ask
Does Engine Doctor come to Olathe, KS?
Yes. Josh is based in Kansas City, Kansas, a good drive north of Olathe, and Olathe is on his list. Call or text (913) 256-5056.
How do I know if it is my starter or my alternator?
One loud click with bright dash lights often points at the starter. A car that starts on a jump and then dies, or shows a battery light while you drive, often points at the alternator. Josh checks both before replacing either.
Can a mobile mechanic replace a starter at my house?
On most cars, yes. Starters are on Josh's list of repairs done at the customer's home, and you get a clear quote before he starts.
Does my HOA allow car repairs in the driveway?
That depends on your HOA. Check the rules before you book, because some neighborhoods limit repairs or how long a car can sit.
Why does my car crank slow on cold mornings?
Cold thickens the oil and makes it harder for the battery to deliver power, so the starter has to work harder. A battery or starter that was already weak gives out when the temperature drops.
