What transmission fluid does
In an automatic transmission, the fluid does several jobs at once. It lubricates the gears and bearings. It carries heat away. And it is the hydraulic fluid that makes the shifts happen, so the transmission depends on it being clean and at the right level to shift the way it should.
Heat is what wears it out. Over time the fluid breaks down, darkens and picks up fine wear material from the inside of the transmission. Tired fluid does all of those jobs a little worse.
Signs the fluid needs attention
A transmission usually gives some warning. If you notice any of the things below, it is worth having Josh check the fluid before it turns into something bigger.
- Fluid that looks dark brown or black instead of clear red or pink
- A burnt smell from the fluid or from under the car after a drive
- Shifts that feel hard or come late
- Slipping, where the engine revs up but the car doesn't pick up speed like it should
- A delay when you put it in drive or reverse
- Red or brownish drips under the middle of the car
Dipsticks, sealed units and lifetime fluid
Older cars usually have a transmission dipstick under the hood, and you can check the level and color yourself. Read the owner's manual first, since many say to check it warm with the engine running and the car in park.
A lot of newer cars have no dipstick at all. The level gets checked from underneath with the car sitting level, and there is a set way to do it. Some carmakers call it lifetime fluid. Ask Josh about that. Fluid still ages, and people who plan to keep a car a long time often want it serviced anyway. Tell him what your manual says and he will tell you what he would do on your car.
Check the owner's manual for the interval
There is no single right number for transmission fluid. It depends on the transmission, the fluid it was built for and how the car gets used. Many manuals list a severe service schedule for towing, stop-and-go traffic, short trips and hot weather, and summer traffic around Kansas City fits a lot of that.
The manual also names the type of fluid. That part matters. Each transmission is built around a specific fluid, and the wrong one can change how it shifts. Josh uses the type your car calls for.

Fluid service isn't a transmission repair
Fresh fluid helps a transmission that is healthy stay that way. It won't fix gears, clutches or other parts that are already worn out inside. If a transmission is already slipping badly or won't go into gear, that is a bigger job than fluid, and it isn't on Josh's list.
Josh will tell you what he sees. If the fluid looks like it is hiding a deeper problem, he will say so before you spend money on a service that won't help.
Leaks and low fluid
A transmission doesn't burn fluid like an engine can burn oil. If the level is low, it is going somewhere. Common spots are the pan gasket, the lines that run to the radiator and the seals where shafts come out. A low level can cause the same rough shifts and slipping as old fluid, so finding the leak matters.
Gaskets are on Josh's repair list. If the drip is a leaking gasket, he quotes that fix along with the fluid.
Booking transmission fluid at home
Call or text Josh at (913) 256-5056 with the year, make and model, what the shifting feels like, and whether the car has a dipstick if you know. A photo of the fluid on a white paper towel tells him a lot. You get a clear quote first, and the work happens in your driveway.
Questions people ask
How often should transmission fluid be changed?
Check your owner's manual. It depends on the transmission and how the car is driven, and many manuals list a severe service schedule for towing and hot weather.
What color should transmission fluid be?
Most automatic transmission fluid starts out clear red or pink. Dark brown or black fluid, or fluid with a burnt smell, should be looked at.
My car has no transmission dipstick. Can it still be serviced?
Many newer cars are built that way and are checked from underneath. Ask Josh about your car when you call.
Will new fluid fix a slipping transmission?
Fresh fluid helps a healthy transmission stay healthy, but it won't fix worn parts inside. Josh will tell you straight if he thinks the problem is deeper than the fluid.
